Painting Title: Caitlins

About the Artist:
Mussa Chiwaula is an internationally acclaimed artist. Polio at an early age caused Chiwaula to become physically disabled, having the ability to use only his left side of his upper body. He has since overcome this disadvantage and has been able to hold art exhibitions all over the world with his unique style of batik artwork.

Chiwaula first started painting during his early school years using natural drawings. At times his teachers requested that he draw posters for class lessons. He never imagined that these simple beginnings would turn into a talent that would allow him to travel the world exhibiting his artwork. The turning point of Chiwaula’s life came when he was refused entry into a university in Malawi because of his physical disability and his dependency on a wheel chair. Frustrated, he tried searching for work but all attempts were in vain.

Several years later he was introduced to an individual severely disabled by polio who used his mouth to paint and who presented Mussa to the medium of batik. After sometime under his tutelage, he was able to hold his first art exhibition in Malawi in 1979. From there on he was able to hold many other exhibitions including Vancouver, Canada; Sydney, Australia; Taipei, China; Cape Town, South Africa and Gaberone, Botswana among others.

Mussa Chiwaula is not only known for his artistic talent but also recognized for his devotion to the causes of empowering the people with disabilities in Malawi and elsewhere. He is the Executive Director of Malawi's disability organization that fights for the rights of the people with disabilities.

He is also the Director of VSA (formerly Very Special Arts) in Malawi that is an affiliate of VSA International based out of Washington DC.

Artist's Statement:
When describing his art Mussa states, "I love to capture the different human activities that happen around me, but mostly I love themes that relate to village women activities. I believe that art can be used to preserve different cultural values that are to face extinction". VSA International seeks to promote artistic expression among persons with disabilities and thus help build an Inclusive society.
