Abilities Arts Festival A Celebration of Disability Arts and Culture

Connections 2 (2005)

Painting Title: Dance 1

About the Artist:
This piece comes from the portfolio "On the dark Side of the Moon: A Dance with Disability."

In my life I see living with disabilities as a dance with many issues; isolation for one. For me, my most current struggle is with relationships, the lack of them and the subsequent isolation that results. The dance progresses, but I find it exhausting and mystifying. My disabilities try to define me in this regard, but I strive against them.

To me living on the dark side of the moon fits closely with the way I feel about my two brain disorders. It's a dark, foggy, troubling place. When my particular brain cycle begins, my judgement is off, my life a perplexing and bewildering place. That's when I hide out on the dark side of the moon, a place of comfort and one that I know well. There's no need to second guess events and people, there exists soothing peace and quiet.

But still I bravely venture out to the light side over and over, trying for some kind of success.

Artist's Statement:
The technique that I used here begins with a digital photography image.

I then use the photographic process of Cyanotype printing (over 150 years old) using larger format negatives I create with transparencies on my computer.

I take the Cyan Blue images and tone them just enough so the colors change but the Blue of the original classic print still peeps through.
