Connections 2 (2005)

Painting Title: Dance 1

About the Artist:
Sergio Giraldo Giraldo was born in the city of Medellin in 1963. He was later diagnosed with a congenital disability that eventually caused him to use a wheelchair. Denied access to many social circles and law school, his experience of living with a disability motivated him to begin an artistic journey over 10 years (1995) ago.

At the moment he lives in Medellin, Colombia.

Artist's Statement:
In my work, I explore an unconscious, abstract reality that is made up of complex symbols, texture and form. I practice a mixed media technique that incorporates materials such as tar, stucco, concrete, paint, sack, cloth, wood, etc.

My work does not pretend to communicate: neither to express, nor at the very least to persuade. Simply put only to persuade a sensation in a subjective way, offering a group of feelings and energy, capable of provoking a response that generates a work of art in the soul.

What he proposes is that viewers, when having contact with his art, will make up their own mind as to what is perceived from the standpoint of their own personal sensitivity. That is why most of Giraldo’s works are untitled. “A conscious mental process in which imagination and a mental evocation of prior experiences, or of recognition (memory), are indispensable conditions for the full experience” he says. His paintings are always associated with changing emotions: reflection or tranquility, expansion or movement.
