Connections 2 (2005)
About the Artist:
From Edmonton, Alberta, Rebecca has been drawing since early childhood.
Largely self-taught, with an occasional workshop or class, Rebecca does
not have a favorite medium; she loves working in oils, watercolor, acrylics,
pencil, charcoal, pastels, pen & ink, collage and some clay sculpture. For
her, each is enjoyable; each has advantages and disadvantages. She is always
looking for new mediums to explore. Rebecca’s favorite subject has always
been people, or the human-like tendencies illustrated in nature.
Having a brain injury from brain tumors and surgery in 2000 stripped away
those things, and left her to wonder just who she was and what it is that
defined her life. She began writing her first poem "The Journey" which in
itself was a journey to write. Thanks to insightful rehab therapists and
dear ones, Rebecca was able to rediscover through painting and drawing, her
connection her to herself, as well as the people, places and things that
influence and reflect the wonder each day brings.
Artist's Statement: This tree, called a Royal Poinciana, now grows in Maurice Gibb Memorial Park, Miami, the place where Maurice would go daily, to meditate and enjoy the waters and wildlife. It was planted in 2004 by Megan and friends, in honour of their love for the Bee Gees. Maurice "Mo" Gibb (1949-2003) – is a tribute to how much he gladdened people’s lives with his music, kindness and laughter, for more people than there are leaves, in more ways than there are branches. May the branches grow strong and tall for all who wander near. And may every flower bring a smile, as does each memory of the vibrant, gentle man for whom it blooms, thanks to Megan and friends.
Where ever you are Mo Gibb…may you enjoy this lovely tree and this
painting and know that they are for you, with love and gratitude, for
showing us how to 'be'.
