Abilities Arts Festival A Celebration of Disability Arts and Culture

Connections 2 (2005)

Painting Title: Heading Home

About the Artist:
I am a 30 year old brain injury survivor. I have always been interested in drawing and painting but before my accident it was just a hobby, not a talent that I took seriously.

Three weeks before my 20th birthday, I was involved in a tragic car accident. The most serious injury was a traumatic brain injury that left me in a coma for a number of months. I couldn't walk or move any part of my body on command. I couldn't speak, couldn't eat.

I have worked hard for the past ten years and continue to do many hours of physiotherapy every week in order to keep improving.

Artist's Statement:
My art is the one thing that I can still do. I was always more of an athlete and my art was something that I didn’t take as seriously. Since my accident it has taken a more important role in my life, since I can no longer participate in the sports that I loved.

Drawing is something that I can do as well as most and perhaps a little better than some people. I’m grateful for the ability that I have.

I was thrilled to exhibit some of my work at Abilities Festival's first art exhibition, Connections 1, and am pleased that my new work has been considered worthy.
