The timber and precision of his vocals are unmistakable. The control and quality and commitment
to the lyrics are undeniable. Whether the song is a nostalgic bar room ballad, a dusky blues
number or jazzy riff, the voice, like the rendition, is as singular as the owner is. An
incomplete quadriplegic since birth, Coughlin won the DuMaurier Search for the Stars in 1979
and received the coveted Jazz Report Male Vocalist of the Year Award in 2000.
Joe has been a mainstay at jazz festivals, on CBC radio and TV, fronting big bands and intimate
trios. In October 2007, Joe released his 5th album, "Things Turn Out That Way", a mix of
revitalized classics and brand new standards performed with the rhythm section of Tony Genge,
Ken Lister and Buff Allen. Bill Runge plays sax & flute and Mike Herriott trumpet & flugel.
As part of Abilities Arts Festival 2005, Joe Coughlin, who performed
with the Mark Eisenman Trio, was a featured at the festival's evening
gala held at the Glenn Gould Studio. During the festival, Joe was also
an active panel participant.
