Keys To The Studio
(Canada)
Keys To The Studio joins the lineup at the 2009 Abilities Arts Festival with a showcase of music created and performed by the Keyholders. Keys To The Studio promotes the creation of original music with a collaborative music project matching professional musicians one-to-one with members of the community of people diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is the first and only such program in Canada to unlock the barriers to self-expression for musicians from this community to reveal their music. Keys To The Studio produces public concerts in April and December showcasing the music of the Keyholders. Programming includes collaborative music-making between professional and young musicians ranging from individual sessions, group practice, jams (some jams are open to members of the public to come and play with Keyholders), audio and video recordings, rehearsals and public concerts. The emphasis is on finding the unique music within each individual through playing instruments, improvisation, composition and performance technique. In Keys To The Studio’s atmosphere of generosity and respect, participants are given the chance to fully occupy the role of creative artist and to make great music.
