Moderator: Fran Odette Panelists: Catherine Frazee, Lorna Renooy, Sheila Boyd, Catherine MacKinnon,
An interactive panel discussion will examine the impact a beauty pageant specifically
for woman with disabilities, such as the one held in the Netherlands, can have on the
public's perception, as well as upon one’s personal perceptions of self and/ or disability.
Together the panel and audience will explore issues such as: What defines beauty? Is
the Miss Ability Pageant to be seen as "celebration" or exploitation? What are some
of the messages one would expect to come out of a Miss Ability event? Are beauty
pageants a valid way to change perceptions about women with disabilities? Might
one's initial reaction to the event change when reading the media coverage that
Miss Ability received in the months after she was crowned?
