PERSONAL STORY QUILTS AND INDIVIDUAL STORY SQUARES

Personal Story Quilt: A story quilt is comprised of a series of personal/ individual story squares. Each square is used to portray a story, image or the unique personal ideas and perspectives of an individual youth. Once all the individual story squares are completed they are connected using a variety of methods to create a quilt which can be hung and which in turn tells a much bigger story.

Story quilts may be created around a specific theme, event or experience with students developing their own story square based upon their interpretation of the given topic. Equally, the square may depict special feelings or things of particular interest to the student or it may simply speak to the general creativity of a child.

Individual squares should be no larger than 10” x 10” and can be made of fabric, paper or other materials upon which youth can draw, crayon, glue, and/or staple their personal story. Photos, found treasures, small objects from home, pictures taken from magazines, and/or personal drawings or poems can be included. Individual story squares can be put together by sewing, stapling, etc.
